FURNITURE Rudy Metzner and Sather Duke are the creative brains behind Hive Mind Design. They specialize in manufacturing interiors, furniture, packaging, and products. I would love to be an owner of their chairs!
Black panda
EVENTS I just came across this Black Panda group while checking out the amazing works of Jennifer Lew. Black Panda represents Asians in the field of creative art and design. They were out representing Asian artists in 2007 at the Dietch Art Parade. The parade was canceled in 2008 because of severe storms and will hopefully return in spring. Can’t wait to see what these Pandas have up their sleeves.
Roger Excoffon
RANDOM THOUGHTS How cute are these calligraphic squirrels drawn by typographer, Roger Excoffon, designer of the typeface Mistral.
Objectified
FILMS I just came back from watching Objectified. I really enjoyed the way the film was shot and pieced together. The flow from one topic to another was very well thought out. However, I can’t pinpoint why but I still think I enjoyed Helvetica a little more.
Raw color
PHOTOGRAPHY Here’s a fun photographic set of stuffed birds and typographic paper cut outs by Daniera ter Haar & Christoph Brach.
Penny smash
GOLD STAR This is a project by Motherbrand that explores the social and cultural function of souvenirs. They asked Douglas Coupland, Marian Bantjes, Burton Kramer, and Paul Butler to create designs for the pennies. This one featured here is by the brilliant, Marian Bantjes. Sadly, these pennies are only available at the Gladstone Hotel in downtown Toronto. Me likeee.
Amos Kennedy
FILM This is a short film that features the work of Amos Kennedy, a brilliant letterpress printer in Alabama who’s fun personality is filled with spirit and humor. Through his colorful posters layered with strong quotes, Amos uses his art to bring complicated issues such as race and gender into the forefront.
Goodbye Cahan
DESIGN NEWS Seems like I’ve been posting about so many farewells this week. So after many years, the brilliant design firm of Cahan and Associates has decided to close their doors. I had the opportunity to go in to their storage room to rummage through their archives to take various printed pieces they’ve done throughout the years. It felt kind of weird taking their stuff and it was pretty ironic to find this moving postcard laying around.
Wired
MAGAZINE This new issue of Wired is pretty crazy. It’s their mystery issue with guest editor, J.J. Abrams. What an awesome collaboration. The layout of the magazine is so awesome that I didn’t even notice that every other page was an advertisement. (Literally, almost every other page. I counted)
Smooth fluid
GRAPHIC DESIGN Nifty typeface by design firm Smoothfluid.
